Present Tense: Plural
For the plural forms of the present tense, add the plural endings to the base form of the verb.
The present tense plural forms of the verbs שרײַבן, לײענען, הערן, שפּרינגען can be found in the table below:
The forms of the verb for מיר and זיי are always identical. This will be referred to as the "מיר/זיי form".
ן– or ען–
How do you know whether the מיר/זײ form of the verb ends in ן– (as in הערן) or ען– (as in שפּרינגען)?
Look at the end of the base form. When the base form ends in מ, נ, נג, נק, in a stressed vowel or a consonant + ל, the ending is ען–. Otherwise, the ending is ן–.
Regular and Irregular Infinitives
The מיר/זײ form of the verb is usually the same as the infinitive. These are regular infinitives.
A few verbs have an irregular infinitive. The מיר/זײ form of the verbs in the table below ends in ען– (see above), but their infinitive ends in ן– (without an ע).
Note that in the verb טו, there is also a vowel change.
The Negative
The word נישט is usually unaccented.
*The conjugated verb is the verb that is conjugated (changed) according to the subject. You can read more about the conjugated verb and the position of נישט in 3.1 נאָך פּרטים. A detailed description of word order can be found in 5.3 נאָך פּרטים.
נישט = ניט
There are two variants of the negative, ניט and נישט. Both are correct.
Choose one variant and use it consistently!
Omitting the Pronoun דו
- הערסט די מוזיק?
- קומסט אין פּאַרק?
- מאָבי, ביסט נישט רײן.
- האָסט צו פֿיל אײַזקרעם.
In speech, the pronoun דו is often omitted when it would come right before the conjugated verb.
The other pronouns are usually not omitted.
