Jewish Tradition and Food

Food is tremendously significant within the Jewish tradition. There are suggestions on when to eat, what to eat, and even how to eat!

For example, all foods are put into three categories: meat, dairy, or pareve—which is the category for food without meat or dairy ingredients. In Jewish tradition, meat and dairy aren’t eaten at the same time, and pareve food can be eaten with either meat or dairy.

In this movie, we see the friends eating a popular Japanese dish: sushi. Sushi is a pareve food, as all of its components—fish, vegetables, and rice—are pareve.

These dietary customs and laws haven’t stopped Jews, living scattered all over the world, from adopting dishes like sushi from their surroundings.
